Matthew 18:15-35 - Offenses And Forgiveness

This powerful teaching walks us through Matthew 18's profound instructions on handling conflict and offense within the body of Christ. We discover that God has designed a spiritual immune system for the church, a four-step process that protects us from the disease of division and bitterness. The journey begins with private confrontation, motivated by love and the desire for restoration, not judgment. If our brother or sister won't listen, we bring witnesses. If they still refuse, we involve church leadership. And finally, if there's continued rebellion, we treat them as outside the faith, not out of hatred but out of desperate love for their soul. What strikes us most is the heart behind these instructions: restoration is always the goal. When Peter asks how many times we must forgive, expecting praise for suggesting seven times, Jesus responds with seventy times seven, essentially saying we should stop counting altogether. The parable that follows cuts to the core: we've been forgiven an unpayable debt of trillions, yet we struggle to forgive others their comparatively small offenses against us. This teaching challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we holding onto unforgiveness that's poisoning our spiritual health? Are we ignoring sin in our community because confrontation feels uncomfortable? God calls us to a higher standard, one that requires both courage and compassion, both truth and grace.
